The Spirit companion

The Lord’s Spirit will always be with that new king to give him wisdom, understanding, guidance, and power. The Spirit will help him know and respect the Lord. ~ Isaiah 11:2 (ERV)

When Jesus was baptized, he immediately came up out of the water. Heaven was opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God coming down like a dove and resting on him. ~ Matthew 3:16 (CEB)

Dearest Jesus, the Holy Spirit flew down from the sky above and rested on you. If God offered you this sign of respect, you are worthy of respect from everyone. Today, my intention is to honor you again because you have wisdom, understanding, insight, and power. Sometimes I forget about you during the day. That's not good. But I need you to constantly refresh my memory. Send your Spirit on me so that I can be all about you, Jesus. Amen.

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
