Growing

I will add to their numbers so they don’t dwindle away. I will honor them so they aren’t humiliated. ~ Jeremiah 30:19b (CEB)

(Jesus said,) “The kingdom of heaven is like what happens when a farmer plants a mustard seed in a field. Although it is the smallest of all seeds, it grows larger than any garden plant and becomes a tree. Birds even come and nest on its branches.” ~ Matthew 13:31b–32 (CEV)
Lord God, you are always growing things -- nations, people, trees, and your kingdom of heaven. I want to grow with you. I want to think like you think and enjoy the things you enjoy. Plant your mustard seed in me. Grow it so that it takes over my life and pushes out all the things that shouldn't be in me. I want to see growth in my life and I trust that you do, too. Amen.

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
