Honoring parents

Honor your father and your mother. ~ Exodus 20:12a

 Your grateful action of caring for your parents pleases God -- a lot!  ~ 1 Timothy 5:4b (paraphrased)
Lord, thank you for my parents -- for all their strengths and weaknesses. You gave me life through them. I admit that it is way too easy to disrespect them by focusing on their weaknesses. Help me to treat them the way that I'd like to be treated. I want to live out the radical dignity that you model in Christ Jesus -- who died to restore honor in our lives. Amen.

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
