Suffering and grief

Maundy Thursday

“God has made me a success in the land where I suffered.” ~ Genesis 41:52b (CEV)

Jesus told them, “My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” ~ Mark 14:34 (NLT)
Lord, I feel like there is too much suffering and grief in life. Sometimes it is overwhelming and I let it all get the best of me. I begin to doubt that you are relevant to my situation. But then, somehow, the good news of your message always seems to breakthrough the clouds. Eventually, the grief is disarmed. It still bothers me that there is suffering but I am confident that you understand. You have experienced more suffering than I could ever bear. Yet, you remained faithful and defeated death for us. I'm so thankful. Keep me mindful of your victory -- especially during the next few days as we revisit the story of Jesus' painful death and then his glorious resurrection. Amen.

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
