GOD'S GLORY

EXODUS 33:18 (CEB)
Moses said, “Please show me your glorious presence.”

JOHN 14:8-9 (NLT)
Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.”

Jesus replied, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and yet you still don’t know who I am? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father! So why are you asking me to show him to you?

SUMMARY SENTENCE
To know Jesus is to experience the very presence of God.

PRAYER
Glorious God, you came to live among us and to show us your glory. Forgive me for all the times when I shift the focus from Jesus and onto the glittery things of the world. Help me to stay focused and to rest in the knowledge that you reveal. I'm going to live for Jesus. Amen.

UNYIELDING

DANIEL 3:17-18 (CEV)
The God we worship can save us from you and your flaming furnace. But even if he doesn’t, we still won’t worship your gods and the gold statue you have set up.

ACTS 4:20 (CEB)
As for us, we can’t stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
The spiritually mature are unyielding in their faithfulness to God and his calling.

PRAYER
Gracious God, you're totally faithful to yourself and your promises. We can count on you but I confess that you can't always count on me. Forgive me for buckling under pressure. Give me a backbone so that I am unyielding in the things which matter. I'm going to stand resolute in my commitment to you and your calling. Amen.

PRACTICE GOD'S WORD

The Fourth Sunday in Lent

AMOS 8:11-12 (MSG)
“Oh yes, Judgment Day is coming!”
These are the words of my Master God.
“I’ll send a famine through the whole country.
It won’t be food or water that’s lacking, but my Word.
People will drift from one end of the country to the other,
roam to the north, wander to the east.
They’ll go anywhere, listen to anyone,
hoping to hear God’s Word—but they won’t hear it.

LUKE 11:28 (CEB)
But he said, “Happy rather are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice.”

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God's word nourishes us but only as we put it into practice.

PRAYER
Gracious Lord, you declare those blessed who hear and trust your promises. Forgive me for not taking time to listen to your word. Since I don't listen to you, why do I think I truly listen to others? I hear to my own advantage. Give me ears, O Lord, to hear you and to listen to you. Amen. (Daily Texts, Ground Up Grace edition)

GOD IS IN CHARGE

PROVERBS 16:33 (CEV)
We make our own decisions,
but the LORD alone
determines what happens.

JAMES 4:15 (CEB)
Here’s what you ought to say: “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.”

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God is in control so align your life with his agenda.

PRAYER
Almighty God, it's good to know that you are in charge and that ultimately we will see how everything aligns with your will. I confess that I'm an independent sort of person and that I let the things which capture my imagination define the agenda for my life. I need to realign my life so that it reflects your agenda for the world and for me. I'm going to start by changing the way that I talk about the future. Amen.

DAILYTEXTS.ORG

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
