LEADERSHIP

GENESIS 3:6 (CEV)
She ate some of the fruit. Her husband was there with her, so she gave some to him, and he ate it too.

LUKE 6:39 (NTE)
Jesus told them this riddle. "What do you get when one blind man guides another? Both of them falling in a ditch!"

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Exercise care so that in your over-confidence you are not leading others astray.

PRAYER
God, thank you for your guidance and care. I confess that in my attempts to be like you I get carried away and act as an authority when I should be less confident. Help me to become a better follower before I try to lead others. I'm going to take a more humble approach. Amen.

THE GREATEST

PSALM 95:2-3 (CEV)
Come to worship him
     with thankful hearts
          and songs of praise.
The Lord is the greatest God,
     king over all other gods.

1 TIMOTHY 6:16 (CEV)
Only God lives forever!
And he lives in light
that no one can come near.
No human has ever seen God
     or ever can see him.
God will be honored,
     and his power
          will last forever. Amen.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God is the greatest -- so great that we'll never be able to comprehend him -- only honor him.

PRAYER
Glorious God, you are the greatest -- too great to comprehend. Yet, that doesn't stop me from trying. I keep thinking that if I could only wrap my mind around you that I might be able to control you. Forgive my presumptuousness. Show me a humbler way to relate to you. I'm going to focus my energy on pursuing ways to honor you rather than grok you. Amen.

HONORING GOD

MALACHI 1:6 (MSG)
“Isn’t it true that a son honors his father and a worker his master? So if I’m your Father, where’s the honor? If I’m your Master, where’s the respect?” God-of-the-Angel-Armies is calling you on the carpet.

MATTHEW 21:28-29 (CEV)
Jesus said:
I will tell you a story about a man who had two sons. Then you can tell me what you think. The father went to the older son and said, “Go work in the vineyard today!” His son told him that he would not do it, but later he changed his mind and went.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Honor God with your actions.

PRAYER
Thank you, God, for adopting me into your family. I admit that I'm not the best of your children. I'm a little cocky and arrogant -- too busy to make your priorities mine. Adjust my attitude so that I'm fully in line with your gracious agenda. I'm going to live to honor you. Amen.

RESCUE MISSION

JEREMIAH 23:3 (MSG)
I’ll take over and gather what’s left of my sheep, gather them in from all the lands where I’ve driven them. I’ll bring them back where they belong, and they’ll recover and flourish.

LUKE 15:4 (CEV)
If any of you has a hundred sheep, and one of them gets lost, what will you do? Won’t you leave the ninety-nine in the field and go look for the lost sheep until you find it?

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God wants lost people found and returned to the safety of his care.

PRAYER
Good Shepherd God, thank you for finding me when I was so lost. I'm not nearly so passionate about seeking out others who are lost. As I begin to feel secure in your presence show me what it means to be sent out to look for the lost. I'm going to join your rescue mission. Amen.

DAILYTEXTS.ORG

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2011 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
